Wrinkles

The first expression lines: they develop at the outer corners of the eyes, forming the infamous “crow’s-feet” wrinkles. While, on men, these may be considered as charming, they nonetheless are the very first signs of aging.

The first true wrinkles: they appear first under the eyes, and are a natural result of gravity. The dermis of the eyelids, containing scarce quantities of support proteins such as collagen, is thus particularly loose (due to the necessity of mobility) and gradually sags.

Moreover, with age, the lymphatic circulatory network (responsible for age-induced under-eye puffiness) and blood microcirculation (responsible for the appearance of dark circles) operate less efficiently. Natural drainage gradually becomes insufficient.

"Overload" wrinkles: these compound the first wrinkles and are caused by intrinsic aging combined with aging caused by external factors (sun, free radicals, etc.). Collagen fibers (the skin resistance collagen) break and become disorganized, while type III collagen (the collagen responsible for hydration and firmness) becomes scarcer.

In summary, with age, the connective tissue loses its volume and density, wrinkles deepen and lymphatic and blood microcirculation slows. Under the action of gravity, the tissues slacken even more and palpebral edema heightens: this causes undereye puffiness or “bags”.
