Age-induced undereye puffiness is the result of the gradual slackening of the skin’s support tissues under the influence of skin aging.
The edema responsible for the swelling of the lower eyelid, or “undereye puffiness”, may have many causes: in addition to allergic edemas, there are everyday causes, such as lack of sleep, overeating, alcohol and smoking (which have well-known damaging influences on venous and lymphatic microcirculation), but also the use of poorly adapted cosmetic products. For example, certain fatty substances in skincare or eye makeup remover products can promote the swelling of subcutaneous tissues via osmotic pressure.
Sometimes, undereye puffiness is present as of adolescence, as a result of excess fat cells accumulating in the undereye cavity – the problem is a sort of “fat hernia”, which becomes even more visible with age due to the gradual slackening of the lower eyelids.
This condition affects about 1 in 30 people and is generally hereditary. Only a benign surgical intervention can eliminate it.
